Planning a website migration without losing useful pages

Treat a migration as a content and customer-journey project as well as a technical move.

Inventory the current site

Record existing URLs, page purpose and content that should be retained. Review known high-value pages and important external links where data is available. Include downloads, forms and images that are easy to overlook when comparing only the main navigation.

Map old pages to new homes

Keep stable URLs where practical. When content moves, identify the closest relevant destination and plan permanent redirects. A blanket redirect to the homepage rarely answers the visitor’s original question and can conceal missing content.

Rehearse before switching

Check the new site with its actual content and key integrations. Test forms, internal links and mobile navigation. Keep a rollback plan and a backup of the old site so a problem during the switch does not leave the business without a working contact route.

Review the public result

After the move, check normal public URLs, canonical information and the sitemap. Monitor available error reports and customer feedback. A successful deployment does not end the migration until the important visitor journeys work on the public domain.
